KNOW THE RISK - MAKE A PLAN - BE PREPARED!

Be Prepared

Our goal at RuPrepared.Ca is to provide Canadians with helpful information regarding hazards in their communities. While forecasting methods and tools are improving every year, disasters can happen unexpectedly anywhere in Canada. It could be an earthquake, a tornado in Ontario or landslide in BC or a power outage in Nova Scotia. Being "Emergency Prepared" can reduce fear, anxiety, and losses that accompany disasters and emergency's.

If you have learned the risks in your area and you have made a family emergency plan and you have an Emergency Kit? Congratulations! you have taken some basic steps in keeping your family safe in case of an emergency. Now, pass on the "Emergency Prepared" message to your friends and extended family. Become the Go To person for information that they may need.

So now after building your emergency kit, making a family emergency plan and learning what hazards are in your community just don't put everything away in the closet. Now is the time to practice with your plan and supplies.

Twice a year my family practices "Off The Grid Day" we shut off the power for 24 hrs and we learn how to survive/cope without one of the basic necessities, electricity! We do this in February on Family Day and then in  early November before Remembrance Day. This is also a good time to revaluate your family plan, check food supplies, emergency kit and to change your water supplies. Every time we do this, I learn something else that we would do different or something else that we may need.

If need be, take a course in survival techniques, outdoor skills, first aid or how to build a shelter quickly. You can find these courses offered all over the country through many community colleges.

Remember to Practice, Practice, Practice.
